eye care

Eyes are your most expressive facial feature. Among the five sensory organs, eyes are the most beautiful expressive organs we have that also have the capability of vision. A woman's eyes are her best beauty asset and they express moods and emotions. The simplest and the most dramatic way to enhance your appearance is to play up your eyes with make up. Too much strain on your eyes or sickness takes away some of the beauty and brightness of your eyes.

Its care is very necessary to prevent eye form damage. It is best to avoid poor light when reading or using computers or watching television for long hours. Very intense light or using very hot or very cold water on the face and head is also not healthy for the eyes. Applying few drops of almond, coconut or sesame oil around the eyes prevents dark circles

Although our skin is of single largest organ of our body, not all part of our skin is created with same character. For example, the skin on the scalp has embedded hair follicles, and the skin of the nose and cheeks tends to have active glands. The skin around your eyes is very sensitive and delicate, which needs good care at all age. Weather its summer or winter or any other season, follow some simple steps and guidelines as under, to have healthier skin around your eyes!

Dry or dull eyes

The aggravation of Kapha dosha causes dull eyes, while an increase of Vata leads to dryness.

Remedies
  • A few drops of honey, ghee or sesame oil use in the eyes.
  • Boil half teaspoon of fennel seeds in one cup of water until it has reduced to half. Cool and use as eye drops.
  • Wash your feet in warm water and massage with oil.
Tense or blood shot eyes

Aggravation of Pitta dosha due to stress, smoke or pollution leads to red sore eyes. Fatigue and insufficient or irregular sleep also causes of tense or blood shot eyes.

Remedies
  • Put 3 drops of rose water in your eyes.
  • Soak a cotton pad in rose water, milk or aloe vera juice and apply it to closed eyes for 10-20 minutes while laying down comfortably.
  • Place a slice of cucumber on each eye for some time in a day.
  • Boil two or three figs and one tablespoon of raisins in one cup of milk. Drink each morning.
Weak eyesight

For maintaining eyesight Alochaka Pitta is responsible and it weakens with age. Proper caring for the eyes is one preventative measure that helps.

Remedies
  • Grind about 1/2 a cup each of almonds, raw sugar and aniseeds. Divide into 40 doses and take one each day with a cup of warm milk.
  • Meditate daily on the flame of a candle.
  • Rinse the eyes with fresh water daily. Rest eyes if working for long periods.
  • Mix some cardamom seeds with one tablespoon of honey eat daily.
  • To reduce the dark circles around your eyes, no matter at what age you are, get at least 7 to 8 hours sleep every night. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated would help you working against gravity; which causes fluid to collect in your lower eyelids resulting in dark circles.
  • Use an eye cream around the eyes to keep moisture in around the eyes skin.
  • When applying cream or make up around the eyes always use the ring finger (as it exerts less pressure).
  • Always keep it in the mind don't rub eyes frequently as this can cause an eye infection and in turn causing infection in the skin around eyes. This is because; few of us bother to wash our hands before touching our eyes.
Some more Do's and Don'ts to soften and rejuvenate your eye skin:

Do's:

  • Dip cotton pads in chilled milk and place on your closed eyes for 10 minutes. Now relax completely. This is to relax the eye skin muscles when they are tired after working with computers.
  • Grate a potato with its peel and apply on closed eyelids for about 20 minutes and relax completely. This is to care your eyes to have firm muscles.
  • Put sliced cucumber over your eyes to avoid developing dark circles.
  • If your eyes are red and feeling itchy, massage your scalp with curd, to reduce the unwanted temperature around the eye skin.
  • Wash your eyes with cold fresh water often to get sparkling feel for your eye skin.
  • Give a massage to your eyes, by gentle finger movement always down to up.

Don'ts:

  • Don't wear contact lenses for extended periods of time or overnight as this makes your eyes feel tiring and hence giving unnecessary strain to your eye skin.
  • When you splash water do not do this furiously believing doing this will take away tiredness instead wash gently as splashing may hurtle the smallest dust particles or an allergen which may damage the cornea which will again spoil your eye skin as well.
  • Don't sit near by the television and minimum of 15 feet distance should be always maintained from the television and keep your book at least two feet away to strengthen your eye skin muscles.
  • Always use cream based eye makeup as powdery eye shadows can enter eyes and, cause irritation to the eye muscles and skin near by your eyes.
  • Do not handle your eyes and eyelids harsh while using lenses, as the eye skin will soon loose its strength by handling rough manner.
  • Don't use your mascara for more than a year, as it may weaken the eye skin.
